The RidgeOak Living Program offers adults with cognitive and emotional disabilities a safe, supportive place to call home, where they can continue to learn, grow and develop. RidgeOak is an attractive home and guesthouse located on 2 landscaped acres in a lovely residential neighborhood in Southwest Austin. Our residential program provides a structured, active, daily routine from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., 7 days a week, tailored to each person's unique interests and needs. Residents share pleasant semi-private rooms that they are welcome to decorate to their liking.

"For more than twenty years, our daughter has been in facilities for individuals with long-term disabilities. At RidgeOak she is happier than ever, less dependent on medications and more capable of living each day with purpose."
                                                                                                           - Anne G.

Program Activities

RidgeOak residents are actively involved in the community, which gives them a sense of purpose and accomplishment, and creates opportunities for shared friendships and helping others through volunteering with such organizations as Meals on Wheels. They may opt to participate in a variety of leisure activities, including shopping, bowling in a weekly league, going to the movies, dining at local restaurants, and visiting the public library. Physical fitness is also an important part of each resident's daily routine. All have memberships at the local YMCA, which is a few short blocks from the residence. There they can swim, lift weights, or soak in the hot tub. Or they may choose to get their exercise in with RidgeOak's Walking Club.

Offering a unique long-term living environment, RidgeOak has been specifically designed to promote dignity, self-worth, and a good quality of life. Both residents and staff work together to foster an encouraging and caring atmosphere.

RidgeOak Registered as First
Eden Alternative Home of Its Kind

Eden alternative

RidgeOak Living Program recently became the first Registered Eden Alternative home for individuals with cognitive disabilities. Eden Alternative is committed to redefining the experience of long-term care for individuals who are aging and disabled, and for the caregivers who work in these environments. Eden Alternative is dedicated to creating nurturing "human habitats" that promote continuous growth and eliminate the plagues of Loneliness, Helplessness, and Boredom.

"We have noticed several positive changes in the program at RidgeOak since they have adopted the Eden philosophy, including the animals, volunteering, more activities, more choices and more power. The residents seem happier, more interested, and more content."
                                                                                             - Eileen W. (Sister)

Homes are approved for the Eden Registry based on their organizational commitment to the Eden Principles, their support for comprehensive staff training, and dedication of leadership to Culture Change that promotes well-being of residents and staff alike.

Founded in 1991, by Dr. William Thomas, a Harvard-educated physician and Board Certified Geriatrician, the Eden Alternative now claims over 10,000 Associates and 270 registered homes in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Japan and Australia.
